Blue Zones Project comes to Tyler, Texas - designing a town for longer lives

The Health Foundation of East Texas launched a Blue Zones Project in Tyler on 2026-10-12, applying Dan Buettner’s research on the world’s longest-lived communities to a whole city. Instead of prescribing individual habits, the project reshapes the Life Radius - the streets, parks, schools, workplaces, shops and homes where people spend most of their lives - so healthier choices become the easier choices.

Key takeaways:

  • The unit of change is the environment, not the individual: policy, public space and social connection are treated as health interventions
  • The model rests on the original Blue Zones finding already in this library (entry 06): longevity as a side effect of surroundings, not a personal program
  • Tyler is a launch, not a result: outcome claims come from earlier participating communities and are program-reported, not yet measured in Tyler

Hype check: Proven - the launch and the project model. Promising - environmental redesign as population healthspan policy. Marketing - double-digit obesity and smoking drops cited for other communities are program-reported figures; Tyler has no outcomes yet.

Why it matters - It is the Blue Zones idea moving from description to implementation in a new American city - a live test of whether designed environments can reproduce what the original regions did by tradition.
